68 outbreaks were registered in domestic pigs, and 73 in wild boar.
It is worth noting, that this year the number of outbreaks reduced almost by half compared to 2021, when 268 outbreaks were reported (175 in domestic pigs and 93 in wild boar).
According to the earlier comments of Rosselkhoznadzor’s officials, the ASF situation is better controlled in Russia, than in the EU countries.
Thus, between January 1 and December 26, 2022, Poland reported 1763 ASF outbreaks (1749 in wild boar and 14 cases on farms). This year 755 ASF outbreaks were registered in Romania, both in wild and domestic pigs.
Information note
African swine fever is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs with a 100% mortality rate. There is no specific treatment for ASF. Following a decision by Victoria Abramchenko, Deputy Prime Minister of Russian Federation, a domestic vaccine against ASF in cattle has to be developed and applied in Russia by 2024.
Wild hogs are considered to be the dominant (natural) hosts of the ASF virus. Infection causes high fever, vomiting and bloody diarrhea in wild and domestic pigs.
ASF does not present a threat to public health, although scientists presume mutations are possible.
