“The Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission decided to provide a tariff preference, which includes a waiver of Customs Duty for chicken eggs (code 0407 21 000 0 CN FEA of the EAEU). The tariff preference will be in place from January 1 to June 30, 2024, and will apply to shipments of fewer than 1.2 billion eggs,” the release says.
“Deliveries from non-CIS countries haven’t been carried out since 2020 due to a high level of self-sufficiency. However, today we see a significant increase in egg prices, along with increasing consumer demand and a decrease in production caused by disease situations,” Andrei Slepnev, the Trade Minister of the EEC, is quoted as saying.
According to him, implementing a temporary tariff preference will enable the import of eggs from Turkey and Iran at prices similar to those of Russian producers. “It is a short-term measure meant to control the rise in consumer prices for essential foods during the winter and spring seasons, preventing shortages,” stated Andrei Slepnev.
The tariff preference will be granted upon confirmation by the authorized body of the intended purpose of the imported goods.
During the week from December 5 to December 11, prices for chicken eggs in Russia increased by another 4.55%, marking a 46% growth since the beginning of the year. Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to it as ‘a failure in the government’s performance’.
