Reminder: amendments to the new law on veterinary medicine introducing mandatory animal marking and record retention will come into force on September 1, 2023.
However, it won’t be mandatory until March, 2024. By that time, a new list of animals, subject to marking and record keeping will be approved.
A Decision of the Cabinet of Ministers containing an updated list of such animals has already been drafted by the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.
Unlike the previous one, the new draft doesn’t include cats and dogs, since pets were excluded from the adopted law on mandatory animal identification.
Although, it includes animals used for cultural and entertainment purposes, like the ones that are kept in circuses or zoos. The new list also contains animals in shelters.
Besides that, the updated list provides for both individual and group marking of animals.
For instance, cattle, horses, camels, and animals from circuses and zoos are subject to individual identification and record keeping.
Sheep, goats, pigs, and fur-bearing animals, as well as bees and commercial fish are subject to group identification and record keeping.
